My dad said this so often that my mother immortalized it in embroidery then framed it so he could hang it in his office. Now it sits in my office above a huge dieffenbachia plant as a quiet reminder to get out and engage with people.

Over my career, I have seen the ‘Siloed Mentality’ creep into many teams and departments. This type of thinking resists the urge to share knowledge with others—even within the same company—and generally ends in reduced productivity and lower morale for everyone.

The problem with not sharing information is that some little trinket of information in your box just might be someone’s crowning jewel—their ah-ha moment—that can significantly change an outcome or event.

The world is moving very fast and developing business relationships requires trust and inclusion in order to create successful networking and collaboration. It’s important to involve everyone, from your customer to those actually working on the project and everyone in between. A well-networked business developer will leverage these tools and begin to make knowledge productive.

When the barriers are removed for sharing information, people start to feel comfortable making suggestions or giving their opinion. This is how you develop “new” information. Each person has their own circle of knowledge and by including them in your circle, you create these new ideas, processes, and ah-ha moments—continuous innovation is your best and most sustainable competitive advantage!

Knowledge is only powerful if it’s shared. Like milk, it’s perishable. After a while, it starts to go off and stink.
